Museum of Photographic Arts

This was my first time at the Museum of Photographic arts in Balboa Park.  It was something very grand and extraordinary to see after being exposed to what photographers go through to get their works done.  I was glad to recognize photographs by some of the artists we learned about in class.  The museum showcased pictures of all different types and eras, it was very interesting to compare and contrasts the works from the 19th century artists with those of today.  Something that I really liked was the plentiful amount of musician pictures shown in the exhibit, which I always find very interesting since I am a music major and I sometimes forget that many times artforms work together very well.

Bakerloo Art Gallery

I visted the Bakerloo Art Gallery in Carlsbad this last week.  At the gallery they had modern art photography and paintings posted on the walls.  Since this art show was a lot smaller than the other exhibits, it felt more intimate and you could meet the artists.  One exiting part about the small art gallery was that, because of the limitations of the room one artist, Matty, brought a moving truck and parked it outside of the studio with his photographs hanging inside of the truck.  People could walk up a ramp into the truck to view his works, which I thought was very creative way to display ones arts

Viva La Revolucion

The Viva La Revloucioin exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art shows a wide variety of modern street art and installations.  Alot of the art displayed at the exhibit was called urban art where the artist would use street objects such as walls, bricks or trucks as their medium.  There was artists such as Os Gemos and Banksy who I have seen their work before because of the Sezio organization which is a San Diego community of all types of artists.

artist Elliott Landy

Elliott Landy is an American photographer who was prominent during the Vietnam era of the late 1960’s.  He lived in Woodstock, New York and took pictures mainly of musicians, musical festivals and the 1960’s culture.  He is famous for taking tons of cover artwork for tons of classic albums.  A lot of Landy’s work represents the tones and moods of the time which he photographed.  Much of his work is very colorful with infrared highlights and detailed color in the photo, then there is another body of his photos which are very dry with it being completely black and white or sepia toned making it seem very old and dated.  But what I love most about Landy’s photographs is that they give me this feeling of home, of something rustic, old and lovely.  They show themes of close family, a warm feeling of comfort or happiness.  His photos usually incorporate the outdoors and nature, or the woods which he lived with in Woodstock which at the time was mostly all trees and wildlife.

Cindy Sherman

The work by Cindy Sherman is pretty interesting.  They mostly consist of portraits of women in different characters and many times they are of Sherman herself portraying the subject.   Most of her pictures are untitled which depersonalizes the photo to a exact subject and also makes it difficult for one to title it a self-portrait.  I found her pictures  to be very grabbing to the audience.  They are usually somewhat weird and creepy, the photographs give me a horror film type of vibe to them.

looking through Jason Bell’s photography catalog  I found through the photoagrus website I kept feeling a similar tone and theme for his pictures but I couldnt figure it out.  I know there is a very glamorous look to his works, they are very professional looking which fits his main subjects which are celebrities or entertainment and advertising.   I saw that all of his photographs have an elegant mood to them, where the subjects in his photos seemed high class and just really fit into the surroundings for the photograph.  All of the pictures felt very proper and well mannered, even if the person or subject in  the photograph actually wasn’t.  Then I finally figured out what it was when I read his bio, Jason Bell is born in London it said.  That is what it is! These all have a British feel to them.  Not trying to be stereotypical of the British, but I feel that these pictures have that tone to them, just as my last photographer David Stoecklein had an American Western tone to his photos.  Jason Bell’s photos, especially his portraits, have a theatrical and detailed mood to them which I found the best way to describe them was as British.

David Stoecklein

i found photographer David Stoecklein through the canon digital learning center website.  I found his photos to be quite nice.  His main focus in his art is the west.   He shoots his pictures so they tell stories of the west, captured for others to get a feel for it.  His topical images landed him various jobs from big companies such as Ford, Marlboro and National Geographic.  He shoots the American west lifestyle of cowboys and cowgirls, horses, wide landscapes and all that comes with the west.

I really enjoyed the colors and expression put through his photographs.  They all have a similar tone of what I feel the American west is, with the desert and the wildlife.  Stoecklein’s photos capture a respect for the life of cowboys on the range which, to me, feels very patriotic.
